What Kind Of Country Treats (Fill In The Blank) This Way?

What kind of country discriminates AGAINST it’s veterans? Apparently, this kind of country. Vets returning from Iraq and Afghanistan have a jobless rate twice that of the general population. Post traumatic stress disorder seems to be the problem. Employers are afraid of it… whether a vet has it or not. Since you can’t tell who’s got it and who doesn’t just by looking, HR folks figure it’s best to steer clear of vets altogether. Now there’s patriotism for you! So much for supporting the troops. (See top video at right.)

What kind of country treats the sick, dying and their grieving families like this? A young man is critically wounded and rushed to the UC Davis Medical Center emergency room. There, five minutes later, he dies. The grieving parents receive a communication from UC Davis in the mail. A note of sympathy or maybe a card, right? No, a bill for $30,000 and a nasty warning not to come back until the bill is paid. (See second video at right.)

What kind of country loudly condemns torture and human rights abuses, yet operates secret torture chambers throughout the world? Iran. North Korea. Russia, probably. Yes, but as with most things, American torture chambers (the ones we do not have because we don’t torture people) are better and often located in more upscale settings. (See third video at right.) By God, we’re against torture!*
*Unless we’re doing the torturing. See fine print for details. Constitutional restrictions and limitations do not apply.

And, finally, like the cherry on top of today’s trifecta of great things about America, there’s this one. What kind of people desecrate religious scriptures to humiliate, mortify and demoralize prisoners? Did you say “CIA” or “American military interrogators?” Bingo! How did you guess?

So, there you are… just a few “feel good” things I wanted to share with you today. Is this a great country or what?

As my dear husband shared one Sunday morning not many weeks ago, this country is in a crisis of compassion and if something doesn’t change, every single one of us should be very afraid. God help us and forgive us for allowing our country to arrive at this state!
