Capitalism: Crass And Crasser. Does It Get Any Lower Than This?

American Girl Doll - Gwen

American Girl dolls are pricey and in demand. They’re cultural icons. Symbols of childhood in America’s upper middle class and well-to-do homes. Girls of all ages love ‘em, and at nearly a hundred bucks a pop, the manufacturer’s gotta love ‘em too. Now, for the crass and indecent part.

The doll you’ll see in the photo and video (at right) is called “Gwen.” According to the storybook that comes with the doll, Gwen is homeless. A street kid with no home. No kidding—a doll that represents a homeless girl, yet sells for $95!

Must be some kind of fundraiser. A campaign to get up money for some homeless shelters or to transition real homeless girls and their families into low cost, subsidized apartments. Don’t kid yourself. The manufacturer, toy titan Mattel, is sticking the dough from the sale of these dolls in its great big, bulging corporate pocket. Not a dime for relief of the homeless.

Nice, huh? It’s the American way. Go capitalism!
