The video appearing to the right of this article wasn’t shot in a third world country. The setting of the video isn’t Bosnia, Haiti, Bangladesh or Myanmar. This Reuters video was shot right here in the U.S.A. in Wise County, Virginia just one week ago—July 24, 2009.
The video documents a wonderful humanitarian program operated by the Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corp, an NGO that provides health, dental and eye care to rural areas in the United States. It also documents the sorry state of America’s health care system.
What we see in this video is a volunteer team of doctors, dentists, optometrists, nurses and support staff engaged in a full-fledged humanitarian relief effort—just like the relief efforts you’d expect to see from NGOs working in the back waters of the world’s poorest countries. Except, they’re working the United States. Remember… the place with the best health care system in the world?
Thank God a non-profit relief agency is stepping up to help these people. Our churches and our government certainly aren’t.
