Roy Moore Set To Goose Step Into Alabama’s Gubernatorial Race

by Prentice on June 2, 2009

Yesterday, on the fortieth anniversary of the events at the Stonewall Inn that gave birth to the LGBT rights movement, Barack Obama became the first American president to formally proclaim June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month in the United States. It seems no coincidence that 700 miles to the south of Washington in Montgomery, Alabama, the sanctimonious and singularly insufferable jackass Roy Moore chose yesterday to declare his entry into the 2010 Alabama gubernatorial race, featuring his moral rectitude as the centerpiece of his campaign.

Moore became the cream pie darling of right-wing über fundamentalists and those unwilling either to read or reason in 2003 when, as Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, he steadfastly defied a federal court order to remove an enormous, granite monument to the Ten Commandments from the Alabama Supreme Court rotunda. His conduct, hardly a model for those who wish to foster a respect for the law, ultimately resulted in his removal from office by the Alabama Court of the Judiciary for ethics violations.

Although Moore holds many offensive opinions spanning a panorama of topics, more than anything else he is a religious bigot of the rankest sort and an embarrassment to all who seek to emulate the modesty and charity of spirit so visible in the life of Christ. Consider the following excerpt from an opinion written by Justice Roy Moore, the God-fearing and loving servant of the Lord, in 2002 when he served as Alabama’s Chief Justice:

To disfavor practicing homosexuals in custody matters is not invidious discrimination, nor is it legislating personal morality. On the contrary, disfavoring practicing homosexuals in custody matters promotes the general welfare of the people of our State in accordance with our law, which is the duty of its public servants… The State carries the power of the sword, that is, the power to prohibit conduct with physical penalties, such as confinement and even execution. It must use that power to prevent the subversion of children toward this lifestyle, to not encourage a criminal lifestyle… Homosexual behavior is a ground for divorce, an act of sexual misconduct punishable as a crime in Alabama, a crime against nature, an inherent evil, and an act so heinous that it defies one’s ability to describe it.

Now, there’s a fellow you’d want as governor, right? There’s a fellow you’d like to sit next to in church next Sunday!

But, this is a serious matter. It is not at all inconceivable that Roy Mooer might actually be reciting the Lord’s Prayer while goose stepping around the Alabama governor’s mansion in 2010. It could happen. Don’t forget that Alabamians have a demonstrated propensity for electing cranks, and demagoguery is a quality historically prized among the Alabama electorate.

Let’s have a look at Governor George Wallace, the Pride of Alabama, forty years ago. Notice any similarities of style?
