America: The Air Guitar Nation

AirGuitar Who knew that there actually is such a thing as a U.S. Air Guitar Championships competition? Apparently, a lot of people, and they are willing to pay ticket prices of $15+ to see air guitarists cavort for a chance to be the U.S. champ. Regional competitions are held in twenty-five cities throughout the spring and summer, all leading up to the grand national shabang in August at which a national champ will be crowned.

While you might expect that something like this might attract an audience and aspiring air guitarists in cities like L.A., Chicago and New York, who would have imagined that an audience for this kind of thing could be found in Nashville, a city busting at the seams with people who really can play guitars?

Okay, why am I blogging about this? I'm not sure, but it just seems that the very existence of a U.S. Air Guitar Championship competition says something unkind about America and Americans. I guess that if it's okay to fake it in everything else we do, playing guitar shouldn't be any different. It's just unsettling that we now award prizes for it.

You’re right. This is pathetic.

This all reminds me of the Elvis impersonators. There used to be a competition for them. It was a pretty big deal with the finals held in Las Vegas, I think. What they didn’t realize is that they were just making fools of themselves. It was sad. The air guitar guys may even be sadder.
