Redbone, the only Native American (or, if your prefer, American Indian) rock group ever to land a single onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart accomplished this feat twice in the 1970s. In 1971 Redbone scored with "Witch Queen Of New Orleans", reaching the #21 position, then vaulted to the #5 position with their 1974 hit "Come And Get Your Love."
On stage, the band, formed by Pat & Lolly Vegas, two brothers of Yaqui heritage, wore traditional Native American costumes representative of a number of Indian tribal traditions. The band's chosen name, Redbone is a derogatory term used to refer to half-breed Indians, but the band wore the name proudly all the way to the top of the pop music business. Success, though, was fleeting. Despite several attempts over the next twenty years, Redbone was never able to duplicate it's early success. Redbone was inducted into the Native American Music Association Hall of Fame in 2008.
